Principal Backend Developer (Founding Team)

About the Role
A fast-growing financial technology firm operating in cross-border payments and digital asset infrastructure is seeking a Principal Backend Developer to design and scale mission-critical backend systems that move client funds in real time. This is the first dedicated backend hire, offering the chance to define the architecture, reliability standards, and engineering culture for the next phase of growth. The position is high-ownership and high-impact — ideal for an engineer who thrives under pressure, values precision, and understands that reliability and velocity are not opposites but complementary disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- •Design, build, and scale backend services that power a global payments and FX platform.
- •Own mission-critical systems that reconcile and route real-time client transactions.
- •Implement and maintain TypeScript microservices running on Kubernetes.
- •Develop asynchronous, distributed systems that prioritize concurrency, fault tolerance, and auditability.
- •Integrate and optimize cloud infrastructure across GCP (open to AWS Exp.) environments.
- •Write highly secure, testable, and maintainable code where accuracy is non-negotiable.
- •Collaborate with founders, clients, and cross-functional teams to ship reliable systems under tight timelines.
Qualifications — Technical Expertise
- •Proven experience building high-volume, low-latency financial or trading systems.
- •Deep understanding of asynchronous architectures, event-driven communication, and distributed system design.
- •Fluency in TypeScript / Node.js; experience with Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud infrastructure (GCP or AWS).
- •Familiarity with relational and in-memory data stores.
- •Strong debugging and observability skills in production environments.
- •Responsible use of AI tools; all code must remain transparent, maintainable, and reviewable.
